I have no clue what category this is.

Nike of Samothrace. Pronounced "Ny-kee".

Class assignment: Drapery. But you knew that.

She's kind of controversial to me, which is why she's kind of weary. Most people think victory as in victory over war, and victory through violent means, but in my heart, I kind of feel like she's sick of all the fighting and would rather everybody win through compromise. However, she's still readying her sword because she knows that to get your own victory, you must be ruthless and pursue it by many means.

---

Nike is the Greek goddess of victory (also, apparently, of strength and glory). She is one of the oldest gods in the Greek pantheon, prior to the Olympians, and a constant companion to Athena.

Apart from that, before I started this picture I had no clue who she was. We were supposed to interpret the sculpture The Winged Victory of Samothrace, quite famous, and here's kind of my interpretation of her. With a head and arm, of course. I didn't use a reference of the sculpture when I was drawing, so a lot of things are off. Not to mention the fact that I got the pillars wrong... T_T

---

This was supposed to be handed in as an assignment for art class but I was told that I lose marks because I smudged her skin--and some parts of her clothes--with tissue. -sob-

So I have to redo it by Wednesday(which is the day after tomorrow orz). -sigh- I'll redraw her in a different pose. A lot of detail was lost and blurred in the scanning process. I had to heavily sharpen some areas on her feet--as you can see, that wasn't very effective there, either. So bear with me, please?

This looks a lot like an older piece.[link] whoops! XD

---

A few hours, a lot of sharpening some 2B and 4B pencils, and a heartbreak. The shading was quite painful, my hand is now sore, thank you, Greek gods. >.>

I think you have a lovely idea, and while I would normally advise against a crop like this, it works fairly well in this image. Anatomy-wise, you still have some work to do, but it looks like you have the basic muscular structure and proportion down. Her feet seem to be lacking defined toes, and though she is a slender figure, her legs and arms still look extremely skinny. I like how you did her hair, and the face looks okay, but the lips are a tad off. Your rendering is very nice, I would like to see just a little more contrast, but otherwise, the dress has a nice flow and the sword reads as metal.

I have to say, even if you have to re-draw it, keep it in a safe place. She's the goddess of Victory. And if this aint one, then my name is Bob...

"Win by compromise"? How does that work? No opponent will agree to be exterminated :D
As for the drawing, pretty awesome! Kind of reminiscent of anime but the face is not distorted like that, which is a major good point in my view. :)

I don't think extermination is part of compromise, personally. ;)

And Nike is not the goddess of war; she is the goddess of victory, aka she probably flips sides because she has to 8)

thanks~

I don't think so either, but it's a part of victory. That was kinda the point :)

Yeah, she does... she abandoned me 66 years ago, and I miss her, but have only myself to blame, I guess.

great image. try using a can of hair spray before you scan to keep the smudging down. I was looking up the statue of nike for my Art History paper and noticed your drawing. one of the best i've seen of nike.
