Featuring Lale, one of my OCs from a story I'm writing :) He's one of my oldest OCs (circa 2004) and... the hardest for me to portray.

I call the guys from this series my Ensemble. Lale is perhaps the only character in my entire mental set of OCs who has any say over what I make him do.

Lale. Lah-lay. A man of little words, he rarely gives his opinion on anything, usually the one getting the job done. Lay is usually misunderstood--not dramatically so, but his lack of words land him in bad situations, and misfortune follows his shadow. He understands the best way to keep his cool, even with his extreme inner emotions. When he loves, the fervor is scalding; when he hates, the rancor is unforgiving. He is a proficient man to the point where it's easy to believe him indestructable, but even he himself overlooks his own exhaustion. Lale is never one to question whether or not to go on; he just does. He is a wanderer, searching for a heart to call home.
Lay is probably the least tangible of the Ensemble. His silence is pervasive, and what goes on in his head most of the time is largely unknown--to an almost irritating extent, where he makes decisions on his own. Lay guards himself extensively, precautious and intense--however, those that he allows in are guaranteed a part in his rich inner world. Lale is as loyal as loyal comes... he didn't lose his eye by accident, in any case. He would definitely throw himself on the line for any of the Ensemble, and for that, they cannot help but love him. :)

Lay has black arum lilies, white being the theme to this series, and black being his countervoice. Arum lilies represent ardour, lust, purity,, as well as death and rebirth. I chose them for their powerful meaning as a way to connect Lale's elusive person to something real and whole. He needs roots like these.

His colour theme has crimson and gray. Crimson is a very private colour with lots of meaning to him, and gray is for the mist that is constantly wrapped around him, the care that he takes to erase traces of himself so that he can wander until he find the safe haven of home.

Art wise: Lale is Turkish for "tulip", so I struggled between lillies and tulips. His name is actually a diminutive form of the Latin name "Lalo", where Lale is pronounced (lah-lay) and means "To sing a lullaby"
(^THE MORE YOU KNOW 8D)
His face caused me pain. There is something about this character that makes me hesitate to draw him, every time I try. Those lilies are my favourite flowers done so far :D

Thanks for viewing!
